The real success of the NDIS is the flexibility of the scheme and the ability for participants to choose what is absolutely necessary for them to live their best life. As a person with high level complex disability I understand that some of these things that I require can be quite costly and I absolutely value the NDIS and how it enables me to do the things that my body won’t allow me to do. These should be the things that the NDIS focuses on. Without these basic things that we all take for granted every day I would not be able to be and live and participate in our society. The chance to choose the way you live every day is a real gift and we need to value that and also share why that is so important as a central pillar to the NDIS. Other choices and chosen pathways forward are important but every day survival supports need to be central to the focus of what NDIS does. People with high level complex disability do not choose to live this life but the help is necessary in order to live. The proposed changes to the structure of the NDIS, particularly the move from “Reasonable and Necessary Supports” to a “Reasonable and Necessary Budget” and defined “NDIS Supports” threaten to undermine and change the core principles that the NDIS was founded upon. Keeping the central principles of choice and control and access to a diverse market of innovative and quality supports is vital to the success of NDIS. However we do need to be wary of practices, providers and people who may take advantage of people with disability, and we need to ensure that real supports are put in place and we do not continue to see some of the shonky practices that do exist where people with disability treated as a bounty or cash cow!
